BMW Z4 A/C Compressor Clutch

The A/C compressor clutch is an important part of the air conditioning system of the BMW Z4 coupe. This component serves to shut the compressor off and on as needed to maintain the desired temperature of the vehicles cabin. Without the BMW Z4 A/C compressor clutch, the compressor would run constantly and soon freeze up and stop working altogether.

What is the A/C compressor for the BMW Z4?

The compressor is essentially the main element of the air-conditioning system of the BMW convertible, but it also requires other parts, such as the clutch, in order to function properly.

As implied by its name, the compressor works by compressing the refrigerant, causing a difference in pressure between the dual sides of the air-conditioning mechanism.

How does the BMW A/C compressor generate cold air?

One of the parts of the compressor is a rotor that is attached to the crankshaft of the engine. When the A/C switch is turned on inside the cabin of your BMW Z4, the crankshaft causes the rotor to begin working by using an electromagnetic clutch that is a part of the compressor. This clutch initiates operation of the compressor by the use of a small pulley.

These components work in tandem with the refrigerant to generate the cold air that is then distributed to the cabin of the Z4 by a fan.

Does the BMW Z4 compressor require any type of oil?

The answer is yes. There are specific oils for use in each BMW model compressor, and the oil is vital for the compressor to work. Just as with any other model, oil levels that are too high or too low can inhibit the proper function of the BMW Z4 compressor.

How do you determine if the BMWs clutch is bad?

A good place to start is inspecting the BMW Z4 clutch pulley belt with the engine off. The belt should not have any oil contamination or cracks that could make the belt slip. If it slips, the pulley will not be able to initiate the clutch to function. Also make sure there is sufficient tension in the belt. There should be no more than one-quarter of an inch of slack in the belt. To adjust the tension:

  • Using a socket, loosen the compressor mount bolts located at the bottom of the compressor as well as the adjusting bolt on top.
  • Pull the compressor against the belt to get rid of the excess play in the belt, and then tighten the bottom and top bolts.

If you still suspect problems with the clutch of your BMW Z4, try using a mechanics stethoscope probe to find unusual noises from this component of the vehicle. While the engine idles, turn the cars air-conditioning controls on to maximum level. Listen for any unusual sounds such as clicking or buzzing noises from the clutch. Also listen for bearing noises in the clutch that are excessive.

If the shaft bearings are worn, resistance will accumulate in the wiring, causing the clutch to fail. If a wobbling of the clutch pulley is noted, it may indicate worn bearings.
