A/C Compressor and Clutch for Lincoln Town Car

The Lincoln Town Car is a full-size luxury class automobile produced by Ford from 1981 to 2011. Air conditioning is one of many features on a luxury car that make for a superior driving experience, and when the A/C system on your Lincoln Town Car breaks down, you will find parts to repair and replace the air conditioning compressor and compressor clutch assemblies.

What are signs an A/C compressor is failing?

Warm air from the air conditioner may indicate the need to replace the clutch or the need to adjust the gap between pulley, belt, and hub; for example, a shim can be used between hub and pulley. If the system is not working but the compressor has voltage as measured by a multimeter, it may indicate the need to get a new clutch. Overheating of the compressor coil may also indicate the need to get new parts. Noisy operation may indicate that the bearing needs replacement.

Why does a compressor clutch engage and disengage?

Rapid cycling of the compressor clutch is often due to low pressure cut-off. When the clutch is engaged, it reduces system pressure in the compressor and triggers the LP cut-off switch, which causes disengagement. When the clutch disengages, the pressure rises, and the clutch engages again. The solution is to fully charge the system to remain high enough not to trigger to LP cut-off. If the problem continues, it may mean that the LP cut-off switch is at fault. These switches may fail over time due to constant wear or excessive pressurization. You can find LP switches for the proper operation of the compressor in your vehicle.

How can you fix a noisy compressor?

The A/C system may make a squealing or rattling noise that can be heard above the noise of the engine. When this occurs, it may be due to defects in the clutch bearing. The bearing should be replaced as soon as possible to avoid breakdown of the A/C system and possible damage to other parts, such as the hub and pulley.

What is a compressor clutch coil?

The A/C compressor cools the air in your vehicle by exchanging heat with a circulating coolant. The compressor clutch controls the flow of coolant through the compressor, and the compressor clutch coil controls the clutch. The compressor coil is an electromagnet that engages the hub with the pulley. If the part is burned out, the air conditioner will not operate properly.
