Ford Fiesta Alternators and Generators

While small compared to other parts of the Ford Fiesta motor, the alternator is an important and necessary component of the engine that must be in good working order for the vehicle to run correctly. As a part of the charging system, the Ford alternator serves to keep the vehicles battery charged, and it also provides usable electrical energy in alternating current to other components that are necessary for optimal operation and performance of the transport. For example, the automobiles computerized electronic components are operational because of the energy provided by the alternator.

How does an alternator work in a Ford Fiesta?

It takes a lot of energy to operate a car. If the only electrical source was an ordinary battery, it wouldnt take long for it to run completely down. How are alternators and generators different?

While both devices generate electricity, they differ in several ways:

  • An alternator produces electricity by means of a magnetic field that is produced by spinning motion within the stator. A generator uses a fixed magnetic field to produce electricity.
  • While both alternators and generators initially produce alternating current, a generator produces it in its rotating armature and, then, converts it to direct current by use of the commutator and brushes. The alternator works by generating alternating current in its stationary stator and, then, converting it to direct current by the rectifiers or diode bridge.
  • Generators are viewed as less efficient than alternators. Alternators only use the energy that is necessary for the job while generators use every bit of energy that is produced.
  • Generators require polarization before they can be used while alternators do not.
  • Alternators cannot be used to charge a dead power source while generators can be used for this.
When did alternators replace generators?

Before the 1960s, automotive electrical systems were served by direct-current generators. As the automotive industry developed and added such conveniences as electric windshield wipers and other accessories, alternators were used because they were better able to provide the necessary electricity with greater efficiency.
