How to Buy Frederic Remington Bronze Sculptures

Frederic Remington (1861-1909) was an American sculptor and writer best known for artwork depicting the lives of cowboys, soldiers, and Indians in the Old West. A variety of collectible Remington sculptures can be found on eBay.

What are the names of Frederic Remington sculptures?

This artist used 22 subjects in his sculptures, which include (in order of copyright):

  • The Broncho Buster (1895)
  • The Wicked Pony (1898)
  • The Cheyenne (1901)
  • The Sergeant (1904)
  • The Outlaw (1906)
  • Paleolithic Man (1906)
  • The Cowboy (1908)
  • The Broncho Buster - large version (1909)
How were original Frederic Remington pieces made?

Remington created clay models of his sculptures, which were cast in bronze by New York City foundries. His first four pieces were produced using the sand-casting method at the Henry-Bonnard Bronze Company. From 1900 on, the sculptor worked exclusively with Roman Bronze Works, which used the lost-wax method.

Are Remington sculptures on eBay originals or reproductions?

Almost all of these works are reproductions. The Frederic Remington Art Museum advises, "Generally, authentic Remington bronzes are not available anywhere for less than $75,000." If you're concerned about authenticity, the museum suggests checking for:

  • Foundry mark - The foundry's name is clearly cast into the bronze base of originals.
  • Base - Copies are often mounted on marble bases, while very few authentic casts are.
  • Numbering - Originals were numbered sequentially in order of production, using only numerals such as 1 or 12 (not 1/50 or 12/100). These usually appear under the bronze base.
How do you care for your sculpture?

The film on bronze artwork is the called the patina. Over an extended period of time, oxidation causes it to break down, which usually makes the sculpture begin to exhibit a green or brown color. Often, the statue will be coated with lacquer in order to protect and preserve the patina. Because atmospheric gas will continue to have an effect on the patina, you need to take additional steps to protect the integrity of the patina. Follow these tips:

  • Ventilate - Keep the statue away from excessive heat and humidity. It's best to display it in ventilated areas.
  • Dust - Dust the piece on a regular basis.
  • Wax - Wax the art, doing so only when it's completely dry.
