Motorcycle Carburetors and Parts for Suzuki GS500F

Riding around on your Suzuki GS500F motorcycle on a daily basis will eventually require some maintenance to be done on the bike. The carburetor regulates the mixture of air and fuel entering the cylinders on your GS500F model, propelling your bike forward. If you start noticing a lack of power, backfiring, overheating, black exhaust smoke, or difficulty starting, examining and replacing this crucial part of your bike may be necessary.

<How is a carburetor constructed?

There are 4 main components that make up a Suzuki motorcycles carburetor system:

  • The float system is a reservoir and staging point for the fuel about to be introduced into the engine of your Suzuki GS500F. Fuel flows from the tank into the float chamber through a valve that is opened by a floating ball attached to a pivot arm. When the fuel in the chamber drops below a certain point the pivot arm will trigger the valve to open and then close again once the chamber has refilled.
  • The Venturi pipe is a piece of steel pipe that is narrowed in the middle to accelerate the airflow coming in through the intake. This part causes a vacuum in the pipe that will pull fuel out of the float chamber and force it into the engine of your Suzuki motorcycle.
  • The fuel jet on your bike is an opening connected to the float chamber that regulates how much fuel will enter the Suzuki’s engine. It ejects fuel into a well where air bleeds and baffles vaporize the fuel before entering the Venturi pipe.
  • The throttle valve controls how much air enters from the air intake which determines how strong the vacuum in the Venturi pipe is and ultimately how much fuel flows into the GS500F’s engine. It is attached to the accelerator by a wire but is also adjustable at the valve to control idle speed.
What is the difference between OEM and aftermarket products?

Once you have determined that you need a replacement carburetor or parts, the next step is to figure out whether to go with original manufacturer equipment, OEM, parts or aftermarket parts. The difference between OEM and aftermarket is that the former is manufactured by Suzuki and are made exclusively for your GS500F. The latter is composed of third party companies producing products more universal in nature. They offer a viable and competitive alternative to OEM parts.

How do you replace a carburetor on a Suzuki?
  1. Before beginning any disassembly make sure to detach the battery cables to avoid injury from fire hazard.
  2. Remove the air filter assembly from the GS500F followed by the choke linkage, throttle, and fuel line.
  3. Loosen all the nuts and bolts connecting the product and carefully remove it from its housing. Keep it level to avoid any fuel spillage then drain the fuel and remove the gasket from the intake manifold.
  4. Clean the gasket, replace it and fit the new part.
