GMC Acadia Catalytic Converters

Make sure your GMC Acadia does its part to keep harmful emissions under control through its catalytic converter. Regular cleaning will prolong the life of a catalytic converter while ensuring continued engine efficiency. When it is time to replace the converter on your car, look for quality parts that are made to fit your Acadia.

What does a catalytic converter do?

Catalytic converters are part of a vehicle exhaust system. They have been required on cars in every state by federal law since the 1970s in an effort to control harmful emissions produced by combustion engines. The converter looks similar to a muffler and attaches to the exhaust pipe. The interior of a converter is formed by a barrier or honeycombed network of porous ceramic beads that filter harmful gases contained in exhaust fumes. The interior of the beads is coated with a formulation of precious metals that includes palladium, platinum, and rhodium, which acts as a catalyst to trigger a chemical reaction. In modern vehicles, a sensor at the base of the catalytic converter transmits information to the engine so the computer can control the air/fuel ratio. The elements converted are:

  • Hydrocarbons: Caused by unignited gasoline, it separates to form carbon dioxide and water vapor.
  • Carbon monoxide: Produced during combustion, it transforms into carbon dioxide.
  • Nitrogen oxides: Produced when nitrogen is heated in the engine and mixes with air, it separates in the converter and reverts back to simple nitrogen and oxygen.
How do you know if your converter is going bad?

Bad converters lead to increased pollution from the emissions blowing out of your tailpipe. They can also affect engine performance. Extreme heat or rapid cooling are two of the main causes of problems associated with catalytic conversion. Being submerged in water can even cause the ceramic beading to break apart and block the exhaust. There are seven symptoms of a potential issue with your catalyst:

  • Decreased performance.
  • Engine misfires.
  • Bad fuel economy.
  • Reduced exhaust performance.
  • Fuel vapors.
  • Increased oxygen.
  • Increased emissions.
How do you clean a catalytic converter?

The biggest issues with these parts are clogs and buildup. However, proper cleaning and maintenance will give the converter in your car a long life. There are fuel additives that are supposed to reduce clogging, but cleaning the catalyst is more effective:

  • Jack the vehicle, making sure it is stable and the exhaust system is cool.
  • Locate the part and remove the bolts.
  • Check the interior and exterior for visible damage.
  • Wipe any debris from the housing.
  • Use a pressure washer or hose with a strong spray to force any gunk and debris from the interior.
  • Soak in a solution of degreaser and hot water.
  • Rinse well and allow parts to dry completely and replace.
Is a catalytic converter easy to remove and install?

Yes, it is simple for an amateur car mechanic to do. Just use the correct size wrench or ratchet, remove the bolts, and slide the part off the vehicle exhaust mechanism. To replace, just reverse the process.
