The Hyundai Sonata is a mid-sized car produced since 1985. The Sonata uses a catalytic converter to convert toxic gases from the exhaust into less toxic emissions, which are then expelled from the tail pipe. Hyundai Sonata catalytic converters derive their name from the presence of catalysts, which cause the toxic gases to undergo a chemical reaction.
What are the main types of catalytic converters?There are generally two different types of catalytic converters. The first type is known as a two-way converter. As the name implies, it converts carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas, to carbon dioxide, and it converts hydrocarbons, a precursor of smog, to carbon dioxide and water vapor. This type of part is more widely used in diesel engines and older gasoline engines. A variant of the two-way converter that is used exclusively in diesel engines is known as an oxidation catalyst, which nearly eliminates odors and particulates produced by the engine.

Nitrogen oxides play a large role in the formation of acid rain and smog. The three-way catalytic converter is commonly used in gasoline-powered vehicles. It is the most effective when operating within a narrow range of air and fuel ratios. The most common catalyst materials are platinum, palladium, and rhodium. Sometimes aluminum oxide is also used.
How long does the catalytic converter usually last?The converter should last for most of the life of your vehicle. However, if your car is experiencing a sudden drop in fuel efficiency, poor emissions standards, or poor engine performance, then the problem could be a converter that has failed prematurely. A damaged catalytic converter can emit illegal amounts of pollutants into the air and potentially damage other parts of the exhaust system, so it should be replaced immediately.
What is the difference between stock and high-performance converters?Stock converters are produced by the same manufacturer as the original part that came with your vehicle, or its produced by another company and matches the original design. The stock part should say that it matches the standard of the OEM, or original equipment manufacturer. This will ensure that the parts are compatible and that you will get the most secure fit possible inside your vehicle.

Whereas regular catalytic converters may restrict airflow, the high-performance alternatives allow for higher air capacity. For older vehicles especially, an original replacement part may no longer be viable, and so you will need to purchase an aftermarket replacement. Some converters also come with all of the gaskets and parts included, saving you the expense of buying them individually.
