Like the engine, suspension, brakes, and exhaust, an automobile’s clutch is a vital part of its mechanical systems. Located between the motor and the transmission on every manual transmission vehicle, a good working clutch is essential to making sure your Chevrolet Camaro’s performance and reliability are as good as they can be. A clutch has many parts that all work together every time your Camaro shifts gears.

In a vehicle with a manual transmission system, such as many Chevy Camaros and Corvettes, a clutch engages and disengages power from the engine to the transmission. This is done manually by the driver through the use of a clutch pedal, which lies to the far left of the brake and acceleration pedals.

A Camaro’s clutch is the first part of its transmission system. It uses friction to control whether or not the Chevy’s engine power is transferred to the cars drive shaft, which then turns the Camaro’s wheels and makes the car move. When the clutch pedal is not depressed, the Camaro’s clutch is considered engaged, which means power travels to the wheels, whether or not the driver is using the accelerator or the brakes. When the clutch pedal is depressed, the clutch is disengaged, which means the motor’s horsepower is not reaching the transmission, nor turning the drive shaft. This is done to allow the driver to shift the car to a higher or lower gear without damaging the Camaro’s transmission.

There are a five major Chevrolet Camaro parts that make up the vehicle’s clutch. Several other smaller accessories attach to one of these parts.

• Flywheel: Connects to the vehicle’s engine and spins when the clutch is engaged.
• Pressure plate: Holds the clutch together. It also engages and disengages the clutch when the pedal, located opposite the brake pedal on the driver’s side, is depressed.
• Clutch disc: Located between the flywheel and the pressure plate and helps absorb friction and ensure the continued performance of the clutch.
• Throw-out clutch bearing and release system:: Two parts that work together to help power the pressure plate. In a Camaro or a Corvette these are run on a hydraulic basis, using master and slave cylinders filled with transmission fluid.

The most common problem to arise with any car’s clutch is what is known as a slipping clutch. The best way to tell if your Camaro’s clutch is slipping is to check the pedal feel and travel while driving, as well as listen to the sound of the exhaust. If the clutch is engaging earlier or later than it has in the past, indicated by the feeling of pressure or resistance in the pedal, it could be a sign that your clutch is beginning to slip and should be looked at closer. This test can be done while coasting, or when using the brake.
