All About Fine Pearl Earrings from David Yurman

One of the biggest names in fine jewelry, David Yurman, designs pearl earrings in multiple styles for multiple occasions. Using precious metals such as yellow gold, white gold, and sterling silver, sometimes in combination, David Yurman provides distinctive high-end pearl earrings. They come in many designs and colors that you can find on eBay, either new or preowned.

There are four main things to consider before deciding which David Yurman pearl earrings to purchase:

  • Color: Pearls come in various colors. Natural colors for pearls are black, white, silver, gray, and gold. The deciding factor for these colors depends on the type of oyster they came from. Often, pearls can be dyed to produced other colors such as pink, red, green, and blue.
  • Shape: Because pearls are created by nacre adding up in layers over a period of time, naturally round pearls are rare. Many contemporary pearl earring designs use cultured pearls that can be grown to become perfectly round.
  • Luster: The intense reflective shine that pearls produce is called luster. This shine is created when a light touches a pearl and reflects off of the nacre layers. The larger a pearl is, the more nacre is layered on it, increasing its luster.
  • Surface Texture: Pearls can come in many surface textures such as scratched, wrinkly, or bumpy. Carefully inspect the pearl for the surface texture you prefer. Also, check to see if the pearl earring has been drilled and has cracks that they might be spreading.

Cultured or Natural?

Authentic pearls come in two types: cultured and natural. They are both genuine gems; however, they form differently. A natural pearl is made by accident when an irritant such as sea dust or sand gets into an oyster's tissue. This causes the oyster's defense system to produce a secretion called nacre in layers. A cultured pearl is formed in the same way, just with the irritant inserted intentionally.
