What is the difference between slide-in and freestanding ranges?

  • Slide-In: Some ranges are designed as slide-in appliances, which create a custom, built-in look in the kitchen. Slide-in electric ranges generally have front controls, which eliminate the need for a back panel and shows off the backsplash.
  • Freestanding: Freestanding ranges are quite popular, generally cheaper, and the easiest to install. The controls on freestanding units are located on a panel at the back that rises above the cooktop.

What is important to consider when buying an electric range?

  • Size: Most ranges come in one of two widths: 30 inches or 36 inches. It is important to make sure you purchase the correct size range, especially if you are purchasing a replacement for a current range in a tight kitchen.
  • Capacity: The ovens in electric ranges can vary significantly from around 2 cubic feet to almost 4 cubic feet. Be sure to think about whether there is sufficient space for the size of range you want and the size of meal you wish to make in the oven. Some electric ranges also offer a double oven, allowing you to cook dishes at different temperatures simultaneously.

What is the difference between smooth and induction ranges?

Electric ranges utilize a flat cooktop, so the burners are not raised like with a gas range. These electric appliances provide effective and precise heating controls, and there are two different types of electric stoves.

  • Smooth: Smoothtops utilize embedded heating elements that heat up the cooktop surface. These elements can come in different styles and sizes, allowing you to select the appropriate combination of elements based on the pan size being used and the heat required.
  • Induction: Electric induction ranges utilize magnetic coils that are located under the surface of the stove. These burners quickly generate heat by using electromagnetic fields, which allows for precise control when cooking and heating. However, these surfaces must be used with magnetic cookware.

What is a convection oven?

Electric ovens heat via elements that are located on the top or bottom. Convection features assist this process even more by using fans to circulate hot air within the oven. Convection ovens are beneficial if you often utilize more than one rack when you bake. Some convection ovens have European convection systems, which incorporate a heating element around the fans to increase heat distribution.
