Ford F-150 Exhaust Systems

The Ford F-150 is a full-sized pickup truck designed for light to moderate duty. This series includes commercial vehicles and chassis cab trucks. Exhaust parts and systems for the Ford F-150 differ in many ways, including the year of construction, cab length, sound quality, performance, diameter and method of bending the pipes, exit point (side, center, or rear), and construction material (aluminum or stainless steel).

Exhaust systems for the Ford F-150 can produce either a roaring or a rumbling noise when the car starts or accelerates. Exhaust systems with straight-through mufflers can produce profound roaring sounds. Those with chambered mufflers produce tuned rumbling sounds. While your choice of muffler design is mainly a personal one, some mufflers produce sounds that are too loud for public roads and may be restricted to off-road use.

The primary difference between these systems is the technology used to cancel out sound. Magnaflow exhausts use stainless-steel acoustical materials and a perforated pipe to eliminate noise. Flowmaster systems use baffles to redirect the waves. Once redirected, the waves will collide.

The technology used determines the time taken for the vehicle to settle down to a consistent low tone. Flowmaster mufflers give off a normal sound level as soon as you start the truck, while Magnaflow mufflers can take hundreds of miles to settle down. If you prefer the loud roaring noise, then the Magnaflow muffler might work for you. If you prefer low tones, then you might want to consider the Flowmaster system.

Neither material offers a performance advantage. Aluminum Ford F-150 exhaust systems are lighter in weight, easier to maintain, and the material of choice in arid climates that have low humidity, no snow, and therefore, no salted roads in winter. In cold, snowy, humid New England, when your Ford F-150 is in daily use, an aluminized steel exhaust system can completely rust out in as little as two years. On the other hand, if you keep your Ford F-150 in the garage most of the year and only take it out when the sun is shining, an aluminized exhaust can have a much longer life.

Stainless steel exhaust systems are more durable, less sensitive to climate, and resist rust and corrosion more effectively than the aluminum ones. Although they have a more elegant look than their aluminum counterparts, stainless steel exhausts discolor easily and need to be polished regularly.
