What Are VHS Camcorders?

Camcorders have recorded important life events for multiple decades, and they remain collectible even today. Many vintage units that are available to buy are functional and come with their original accessories, and analog camcorders combine the functions of distinct sections to create media on several different types of tapes.

How does a camcorder work?

Analog camcorders have multiple sections that make up the camera system, with each part doing its own specific job.

  • The camera section consists of the CCD, lens, and motors that handle optical zoom, aperture, and focus. Visual information is then interpreted as an electronic signal.
  • The VCR section receives this signal and records it onto the tape as a magnetic pattern, with the technology used here being the same as what is used in television VCRs.
  • The viewfinder displays the video image during filming. These screens can be color or black and white, with many actually being very small televisions. Some camcorders use large LCD screens instead.

Which kinds of tape are used for recording?

Video and sound taken by the video camera when filming is recorded onto tape, with multiple formats having their own characteristics.

  • Standard cameras use the same type of videotape as VCRs. One advantage of this is that recorded video can be played in a VCR immediately after, though a disadvantage is the need of a larger camcorder. VHS-C uses a more compact cassette and has a higher resolution. While this type cannot be played in a VCR, the camcorder itself can be hooked up to a television for playback.
  • Super versions of these exist, with the key difference being a higher resolution. When copied, analog recording media can cause a loss of quality in comparison to the original.
  • 8mm and Hi-8, with Hi-8 offering a higher resolution, can also be used in some camcorders. These camcorders are compact, and this recording format produces better sound quality. Some cameras that use this type of film are even small enough to fit in a pocket.

Why buy a Hitachi camcorder?

Hitachi is one of numerous manufacturers that produced camcorders used by many consumers.

  • Vintage camcorders are sought after by collectors and those who enjoy nostalgia. You should note, however, that some older camcorders may not be functional after years of usage, wear, and storage.
  • Hitachi cameras often come with additional accessories, which may increase their collectible and functional aspects. Storage bags, charging cables, batteries, and adapters are some examples, and this depends on the individual cameras features and history.
  • Cameras from this manufacturer are widely available, even with most being in vintage condition. This may make finding a functional unit possible, as well as sourcing parts doable if necessary.
