Selecting a Minolta Auto Focus Camera Lens

Whether you are taking a picture of a beautiful sunrise or are snapping photos at a wedding, an auto focus camera lens allows you to take the picture without needing to alter the focus with each shot. These lenses can come with a wide range of various aperture amounts with the maximum aperture extending from f/1.2 to f/8. Minolta lenses are also designed to work with both film and digital cameras.

How does an auto focus system work with a lens?

This is a type of optical system that uses the control system of the camera, the sensor, and a small motor to change the focus of the lens automatically without requiring you to do so by hand. This system will automatically focus on a subject or object within the photo and will change the focus amount before you take the picture.

This system is primarily designed to help make the picture and the subject in it sharp. While this system will focus on the subject without needing you to do anything with your Minolta lenses, it is possible to manually set the subject of the photo before the auto focus system kicks in.

What are the different types of lenses available?
  • Fisheye: This is a wide-angle lens that captures images at a field of view that can extend as high as 180 degrees. These lenses cause a distorted effect on the edges of the image that make for a hemispherical photo.
  • Macro: This is a type of lens that is meant to be used for close-ups and can cause small objects to appear to be larger than life. They usually have 1:1 magnification.
  • Telephoto: This is a lens that is outfitted with a long focal length. This length results in an image that comes with a narrow field of view that is magnified.
Which types of cameras can these lenses work with?
  • Camcorder: This is a type of video camera that can capture and record video. This video can be captured in a variety of standard definition and high definition resolutions. Some camcorders save the video onto memory cards while others save it onto such media as cassette tapes.
  • Medium format: This is a type of still camera that is meant to use film that is larger than 35-millimeters and smaller than 4x5 inches. The standard size of the film used in medium format cameras is around 120-millimeters.
  • Digital SLR: This is a digital camera that saves all captured photos and video onto memory cards and comes with a range of automatic and manual features. These devices are equipped with interchangeable lenses as well.
  • SLR: This is a type of camera that can capture images onto photographic film and uses a single-lens reflex system. These cameras primarily make use of manual features and settings.
  • Point-and-shoot: This is a compact camera that is designed mainly with automatic features and usually comes with a variety of filters that change the appearance of a scene. They are also outfitted with retractable lenses.
