Motorcycle Headlight Assemblies for Honda XR650R

The headlights are a critical safety component of any motorcycle, such as the Honda XR650R, so understanding how they work and the benefits of each of the different types is important to maximizing safety. If the headlights that you want on your bike are not the same as the original headlights, it is important to make sure that the components are compatible with your motorcycle.

What kinds of motorcycle headlights are there?

There are three main types of headlights that fit a Honda XR650R: halogen, Xenon HID, and LED. Each of these types has different characteristics, and should be considered based on the particulars of your common driving conditions.

  • Halogen: These bulbs function in much the same way as traditional household incandescent bulbs do, with a metal filament inside of a glass tube. The main difference between these headlights and household lights is the glass, which must be more durable in headlights to withstand the operating conditions, and the gas inside the headlights. Halogen motorcycle headlights use a halogen gas, which has a special purpose inside the bulb. The extreme temperatures that the filament must endure cause some atoms to be vaporized. However, the halogen gas is able to collect these atoms and redeposit them onto the metal filament as the bulb cools. This helps to extend the lifespan of the bulb.
  • Xenon HID: Widely used because of their bright light, Xenon headlights avoid the use of a filament altogether, instead opting for a focused electric arc between two electrodes inside the light. The light produced by this arc is relatively insignificant, but the reaction between the arc and the Xenon gas inside the lights causes the gas to become highly charged and emit very bright light.
  • LED: LED headlights are a recent development in motorcycle headlights.
What does OEM mean?

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer, which is the company that designed and manufactured the original components in question. When replacing old or worn-out parts in your Honda XR650R, it is important to get replacements either from the OEM, or another source of OEM-certified products. If they are not certified by the Original Equipment Manufacturer, chances are high that they will not fit properly, which could result in other issues, including damaging other related components or early part failure. Failing components could be very dangerous to both you and the bike, so make sure that all replacement parts are certified for use with your Honda XR650R.
