Motorcycle Brake Pads for Harley-Davidson Softail

In 1984, Harley-Davidson released the Softail model, designed by Bill Davis. This is a motorcycle with a hard-tail look but with shock absorbers or springs hidden underneath the seat or positioned along the bikes axis.

How do you know when to change the brake pads?

Brakes on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle work much like brakes on a vehicle. On the handlebars, youll see a clear brake fluid container. When you press the brake lever, it pushes in a hydraulic piston into a cylinder that pushes fluid down the brake line and pushes the caliper against the brake pads.

When the pads start to become worn down, youll begin to hear a grinding or squeaking noise. Brake pads are designed this way in order to let you know it is time to replace them. These wear indicators come in the form of metal clips, and if not tended to in a timely manner, they can cause added wear on your brake discs. Once you hear grinding, you can be sure that the pads are almost gone.

Why do the brakes feel squishy or soft?

If you press the braking lever on your Harley and it goes all the way in or it feels squishy or soft, there could be a number of problems ranging from air in the line to a bad cylinder. A line can become damaged for a number of reasons, or rust can cause a leak. Seals in the cylinder become worn-out over time, which also results in fluid leaking out. Lastly, disc calibers can become damaged due to overheating. If this is the case, youll hear grinding or squeaking.

When should you change your brake pads?

Depending on how much riding you do and how far you ride will make a difference in how often you should change your brakes. Thickness is very important, which means you should make it a habit of checking them if you ride regularly or you are about to go on a long trip. It is recommended to change brake pads when they reach the 0.016-inch mark or under. As far as the rotor is concerned, it is good to replace it when it reaches 0.008 inch. One way to quickly assess the condition of your brakes is to look at the fluid level. If the level is low, its a good idea to check the rest of your Harleys braking system.
