Motorcycle Brake Pads for the Yamaha V-Star

The pads in your Yamaha V-Star’s braking system are essential. There are many types of pads available for your bike, no matter its model year. These pads come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and are made of many different materials.

What types of brake pads are available for the V-Star?

Pads are typically categorized by their origin material. You can find a wide variety of Yamaha OEM and aftermarket parts that are designed to fit your specific motorcycle model. The categories of pads consist of the following characteristics:

  • Sintered: This category of pad is considered an option for all-around use. They are designed to be wear resistant in a wide range of conditions, whether youre riding around the city or racing. These pads are made by fusing metallic particles together under extreme temperature and pressure.
  • Organic: This category of pad consists of softer, more malleable materials. These fiber and filler materials are bound with a special resin that makes them an ideal choice for casual riders who have no need to change their rotors often. You can find organic types made with additional materials as well, such as carbon composite or Kevlar, which makes them stronger.
  • Semi-Sintered: This category of pad blends together the performance benefits of sintered and the malleability of organic pads. While these arent designed for all motorcycles, they typically produce the low rotor wear of organic pads and the progressive feel of sintered.
  • Ceramic: This category of pad consists of resistant materials that allow you to have stopping power in both cold and hot temperatures. They are made of ceramic and metal fibers that are bonded at high temperatures, and they are a good choice for everyday riders.
How do you know when to replace your brake pads?

There is no schedule or recommended time at which you should change your brake pads. Typically, how often you use your bike and brakes determines how often you should replace these parts. The more you brake, the more wear and strain is placed on the pads. However, keep in mind that most types of pads can last for thousands of miles.

Symptoms of worn-down pads include squealing or squeaking when you press on the brake-lever and noticeable wear on the pads. By looking underneath your classic Yamaha V-Star motorcycle, you can measure the lining of your pads. If the lining measures an eighth of an inch or less, they should be replaced.
