Most bass drum shells consist of at least 2 pieces of resonant materials joined together at the seams. Pearl bass drums have seams called scarf joints. These joints have been designed with special shapes to help maximize their surface areas. This design is meant to allow for more joint-strength as well as to provide a more resonant inner chamber on the drum.

This partially depends on how you use and care for your drums. In general, you should change your drum heads when they show signs of damage or wear. Over time, the heads can stretch out, lose elasticity, and diminish in sound quality. To help avoid this situation, you can replace your heads on regular time schedules.

The sound engineers at Pearl use many finely crafted materials in their drums. To ensure that these materials retain their acoustic qualities, you should only use recommended bass drum cleaning products. These include the following:

• Waxes: Pearl bass drums with wooden shells often have lacquered finishes. Drum shell waxes can help protect and enhance the looks of lacquered hardware.
• Acrylic cleaners: To clean bass drums with acrylic shells, you will need special acrylic glazes and scratch-free application cloths.

Superior Shell Technology (SST) is a proprietary Pearl bass drum shell-treatment process. During the SST treatment-process, drum makers mill wood to precise, airtight specifications. Manufacturers then coat the base wood with a specially formulated glue that seals the wood. This sealing process provides airtight inner chambers and high-resonance outer perimeters.

You can tune your Pearl bass drums in a variety of ways, and you can also change the sound output of your drums with muffling materials. Muffling materials are soft, sound-absorbing materials that fit in the air chambers of your bass drums. From this position, they can reduce vibrations in the shell and front heads of bass drums. This muffling effect can allow clearer tones to emerge from the sides and the heads. In addition to homemade mufflers like pillows, you can use Pearl muffling rings or sound-deadening drum heads.
