Stihl Corded Electric Chainsaws

Corded electric chainsaws are lightweight saws designed to be used with an extension cord plugged into an outlet to operate. The chainsaw can be used to do things like cut down trees, trim branches off of trees, and cut up logs for a fire. Founded in 1926, Stihl is a company that makes corded electric chainsaws.

How do you use an electric chainsaw?

An electric chainsaw, such as one made by Stihl, runs off of your regular home electric current. Plug an extension cord into a 110-volt electric box and connect the other end of the cord to the electric chainsaw. You press down on the trigger to start the saw, and you take your finger off of the trigger to stop it. You need to make sure the oil reservoir in the saw always has oil in it or you can overheat the electric chainsaw and damage it.

How can you tell when the blades needs sharpening?

Sharp cutting blades, or teeth, are needed to maintain the cutting power of the saw. There are several ways to notice when the blades needs sharpening or replacing on an electric chainsaw, including

  • Cutting power - The slicing power is reduced, and the chain won’t dig into the wood you are cutting.
  • Sawdust size - Sharp cutting blades typically produce chunks of sawdust as they slice through wood. Once the blades become dull, fine pieces of sawdust are produced.
  • Smoke - Dull chainsaw blades will create a lot of friction between the chain and the wood. The friction will heat up the wood and cause it to smoke.
  • Crooked cuts - You will start to see crooked cuts develop if one side of the blades become dull. The sharper blades on the other side will pull the chainsaw in that direction.
How do you replace the chain?

The chain is wrapped around a metal guard bar and a sprocket that spins it around. There are two nuts on the guide bar slide plate. These nuts and the plate need to be removed. You then release the tension on the chain by sliding the guide bar backward so that you can remove it.

You place the new chain around the guide bar and sprocket. You must make sure the cutting blades are facing forward, or they won’t slice through wood. Slide the guide bar up to increase the tension, replace the cover, and screw on the bolts. There is a screw you can use to increase or decrease tension on the electric chainsaw until there is only a little slack in the chain as it sits on the guide bar.
