Safariland Gun Duty Holsters

Whether you carry a gun professionally or for personal safety, a quality holster is vital. Safariland offers a wide range of tactical duty holsters for law enforcement officers. Their products have a choice of safety features.

What are Safariland duty holsters made of?

Safariland makes their belt holsters out of two proprietary materials. SafariLaminate is a synthetic thermal laminated material. It does not absorb moisture, and it cannot be penetrated by pathogens found in blood. SafariLaminate does not deteriorate from normal exposure to the elements the way that natural materials often do.

SafariSeven is a light nylon blend. It offers all the features of SafariLaminate. SafariSeven also performs throughout the temperature range of minus 50 to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. The material can also be submerged in water for long periods without being affected.

SafariSeven is nonabrasive, so it will not mark your weapon. Because of this, it is used as a lining in some SafariLaminate holsters. Natural suede is used to line others as it, too, is nonabrasive.

What is a retention rating?

When you are talking about tactical duty holsters, retention means the ability to keep the firearm in the holster. At the most basic level, you do not want the gun to fall out during everyday activities. Beyond that, many users want the belt holster to provide some defense against an opponent trying to take the weapon. Most holster manufacturers classify their products into four retention levels. Levels I through IV refer to how many layers of defense the holster provides.

Retention can be either passive or active. Passive retention requires the operator to consciously choose to engage the devices. A holster with active retention automatically engages whenever it receives the gun.

What levels of retention do Safariland duty holsters offer?

You can choose Safariland holsters with any of the four levels of retention. Some law enforcement departments stipulate which level their officers must use. If you have free choice, weigh the balance between security and ease of draw.

What retention devices are used in Safariland holsters?

Safariland uses both universal and proprietary retention devices. A holster may have one or a combination of these devices to make it Level I, II, III, or IV.

  • Friction provides the lowest level of security. Few duty holsters rely on this alone to keep the weapon seated. Molding a holster to fit a particular model of gun adds more friction, providing more security against accidental release.
  • Thumb breaks are straps that fasten across the top of the holster with a snap. They release with a flick of the thumb.
  • Hoods resemble thumb breaks, but they are rigid and require the operator to push them down and forward before drawing the weapon. Safariland’s Self Locking System uses a rotating hood.
  • Tension devices secure a gun when it is put into the holster. Safariland’s Automatic Locking System requires the user to push a thumb lever to release the weapon.
What other features are offered on Safariland duty holsters?
  • Low-ride, mid-ride, or hi-ride belt loop.s
  • Compatibility with 2-inch or 2.5-inch belts.
  • Accommodation of red-dot sight on some models.
