Play Your Vinyl Records With a Shure Turntable Cartridge

With the resurgence of vinyl records, turntables and record needles are back in a big way. Shure is one of the most prominent makers of turntable and audio accessories. They provide a range of products and accessories such as user replaceable styluses for record players.

What types of replacement phono cartridges does Shure make?

Shure makes a complete range of phono cartridges. Some types include:

  • Moving Magnet: Moving magnet assemblies feature a magnet in the cantilever and moving coils. Together, they create a cartridge with an electromagnetic field. These tend to be more expensive but can have a heavier touch than moving coil models. The M95ED is one example of this type of phono cartridge.
  • Moving Coil: In this type of cartridge assembly, coils are attached to the cantilever of the unit. The magnet is fixed in a separate location. These Shure phono cartridges are lighter and may cause less wear on the vinyl. They tend to be more expensive than moving magnet models. No Shure turntables made now have this style cartridge, though some vintage models still do.
  • Standard Mount: This type attaches to the tonearm with wires and is fastened with two screws and nuts. They are more adjustable and have better sound quality than P-Mount cartridges. They tend to be more expensive and used by DJs and other audiophiles.
  • P-Mount: These models attach to the tone arm of the record player with four prongs at the back of them. They are reinforced with a single screw. These cartridges are the most common style on the market and tend to be inexpensive. Replacement is easy for this type of phono cartridge.

What is the difference between a stylus and a cartridge?

The cartridge is the whole apparatus that is attached to the tonearm. The stylus is the needle itself. With a moving magnet design, you can leave the cartridge in place and swap out the needle. For a moving coil style setup, the whole unit needs to be replaced. Most manufacturers have trade-in programs for the more expensive moving coil cartridges.

What are some common models of the phono cartridges made by Shure?

  • N21D: This Shure model is designed to accommodate a diamond stylus. This is a moving magnet cartridge, so the stylus can be replaced independently.
  • V15: This cartridge has been through a number of versions, from Type I to Type III. Type III is 25% lighter than Type II. This is also a moving magnet style design.
  • M75E: This is another MM unit. It has up to 6.2 millivolts of audio output and its P-Mount attaches easily to the sound arm.
