How to Choose the Right Home Theater Receiver

A home theater receiver (also referred to as a Surround Sound or AV Receiver) forms the heart of a home theater system, providing centralized connection and control. It provides most, if not all, the inputs and outputs that you connect everything, including your TV, into. Sony Dolby Pro Logic 5.1 Home Theater Receiver aims to provide extensive audio and video switching, processing, network connectivity and control capabilities, making it one of the great hubs for home entertainment.

What Are the Functions of a Home Theater Receiver?

A home theater combines the major functions of three components

  • Tuner: A home theater either comes with a built-in tuner for AM/FM or the ability to add or access to HD radio, internet radio or music streaming services.
  • Preamp: This is in charge of controlling which audio/video source is selected, for instance, Blu-ray Disc Player, DVD player, VCR, CD player, iPod among others. It processes the incoming stereo/surround sound signals and distributes audio to the channels and subwoofer output. Video from designated components routes to a TV.
  • Amplifier: Home theater receiver has a built-in multi-channel amplifier that sends the surround sound signals and power to the speakers. In addition, one or two preamp outputs for connection of a powered woofer is also provided.

What Are the Core Features of a Typical Home Theater Receiver?

  • Power output: The power output capabilities of home theater receivers vary from one system to another depending on the size of your room and the power requirements of your woofers.
  • Surround sound format: When choosing a home theater receiver, you should consider the system’s ability to provide a surround sound listening experience. Most home theater offer options such as DTS Digital Surround, Dolby Digital, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding which are the primary formats on Blu-ray Discs. Depending on the manufacturer, you may find surround sound formats such as DTS:X, Dolby Atmos or Auro3D audio. However, Auro3D audio and DTS:X often require a firmware update. It is worth noting that various surround sound formats dictate how many channels a home theater receiver may have.
  • Connectivity: In addition to speaker connections, home theater receivers provide several audio connections such as digital coaxial, analog stereo and digital optical. Video connection options may include composite and component video. Latest home theater receivers use HDMI instead of the component and composite options.

What Is the Difference between a Home Theater Receiver and a Stereo Receiver?

The difference is that a home theater receiver is optimized to be the central connection and control hub for both the video and audio needs of a home theater system whereas a stereo receiver is optimized to function as the control and connection hub for an audio-only listening experience.
