- Remove all bolts that hold the starter housing to the bikes engine. Slide the starter out of the engine block until it is freed from its position.
- Place the new starter into the engine block where the old starter was housed. Use the owners manual and manufacturers recommendation for torquing the starter bolts. Be sure that the starter gears are aligned properly to prevent unnecessary and premature wear.
- Connect the power cables and wires that go to the starter and starter relay.
- Reconnect the negative and the positive battery cables.

- Collect the equipment: To bench start a starter, you will need a set of battery jumper cables, a jumper wire, and a battery.
- Supply the power needed: Attach one of the jumper cable ends to the battery. The other end of the same cable needs to be attached to the starter. Attach the positive jumper cable to the batterys positive terminal. The other positive cable needs to attach to the stud located on the starter solenoid.
- Attach the jumper wire: One end of your jumper wire must be connected to the starter solenoid. Touch the other end of your jumper wire to the starter solenoid terminal where the start/crank wire is attached.
- Assess the results: If your starter works and the starter pinion gear spins, then the starter is in good repair.
