Racks de direção e Caixas de Engrenagem Para Honda S2000

What Do I Need to Know My Steering Rack?

The steering system found in most cars, especially modern cars, is a rack and pinion steering system. This system is comprised of several components the main and intermediate shafts, the universal joints and the steering rack or gearbox, which sits at the center of the steering system. Basically, the steering system is the central unit that receives input from the driver by way of the steering wheel and the steering column and relays a mechanical signal to the tie rods and the steering shafts an efficient left and right turns.

What Are the Signs That Your Honda S2000’s Steering Rack Is Failing or Bad?

  • Very tight steering wheel: The power steering unit supports the rack and pinion system. The power steering rack uses hydraulic pressure to allow easy and quick steering wheel handling. The steering Gear, however, becomes very tight and hard to turn when the gearbox builds up more heat or loses hydraulic pressure from the power steering unit.
  • Leaking power steering fluid: Low power steering fluid may be indicated by tight steering. Given that the steering gear is hydraulically powered, a drastic drop in the fluid levels shows that there is a leak in the system. Check if there is a loose fitting, broken gasket or any other mechanical issue that could be causing the leakage.
  • Grinding noise when steering: A failing gearbox is many a time caused by lack of proper lubrication and service. Lack of lubrication means more heat which will in turn cause metal-on-metal contact and these produces a loud grinding noise whenever you turn left or right.
  • Burning Oil smell: This is rare but its also a sign of a bad steering rack or gearbox. If you were driving your S2000 and happen to smell a strong aroma of burnt oil, stop your vehicle immediately. If you continue to drive while the steering rack is overheating cause fire.

How Can I Replace a Bad or Failing Steering Rack or Gearbox?

If you feel like the steering is not working properly then it is advisable to fix it as soon as possible. Have a mechanic inspect the entire steering and the suspension system. Still, if you happen to be in a place where there are no nearby mechanics to help you fix the issue, dont worry, here are the steps on how you can do it yourself:

  • Raise the vehicle, supported on jack stands.
  • Remove the tires and tie rods, and disconnect the steering gear.
  • Replace the steering rack and gearbox.
  • Reinstall the tires; fill the system with new fluid.
  • Lower the vehicle off of the jack stands.
