How does a BMW X3 power window work?
In cars with power windows, the window regulator is the part that moves the glass up and down. It is powered by a small electric motor. Each window has its own window regulator and motor. There are two types of window regulators: a gear type and a cable type. The BMW X3 has the cable-driven type. This type has a metal track that is mounted vertically inside the door panel to guide the glass as it slides up or down. Some systems have more than one track, and others have one down the center of the door. An electric motor moves wires that glide across a series of pulley wheels connecting to a window tray or set of clamps. As the wires are pulled back and forth, the glass opens and closes. In this type of system, the wire suspends the full weight of the glass.
Are the window regulator and motor one component?
In some cars, the motor and regulator come as one unit; but in others, they can be replaced as separate components. In the BMW X3, they are separate units and can be replaced independently. When replacing the motor, it would be wise to inspect the regulator parts to save time and labor in the future, as both typically show wear at the same time. It is also important to check the vapor seal whenever you have to remove the door cover to replace parts.
How do you know when window parts require replacement?
The most common symptom that parts need to be replaced on your BMW X3 auto is any type of failure for the window to open or close. If the cable breaks, your glass will fall down into the door panel and you will not be able to get it out. A broken regulator cable can also cause the glass to jam in any position. Any abnormal noise when the window is moving is also a sign of trouble. Other problems include the glass rising slower than usual or not fully closing. If the window slides up or down in a crooked manner, that is also a sign of trouble. If you hear the mechanism running, but the window doesn’t move, you will need window replacement parts.
Are the window parts the same for every window?
On the BMW X3, the power lift regulators, clips, and mounts are different. This is due to the orientation of each of the glass parts on the right or left side of the vehicle. In addition, the front and rear glass are different shapes. It is important to purchase the correct part for the specific area of the vehicle.
